⏳ Erebus Growing | 0033 - For better or worse, 100 days to think about

How do your habits stack up and improve (or make worse) your life?

Welcome to Erebus Growing, a weekly email where I share little snippets of life to help you change and grow into your highest life.

Our students at the 9-5 are coming back this week and it’s going to be quite the year.

My responsibilities are changing and I should hopefully be finding out in the next couple of weeks about the formal changes along with my new salary.

With that comes decisions about the part time which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working at but it’s exhausting.

There are a lot of changes happening but it’s all good and I’m more excited than ever before!

And the best part is, overall, it’s all for the better.

👨🏻‍💻 Meditation

If I repeated this day for 100 days, would my life be better or worse?

Sahil Bloom, The Friday Five email, July 7, 2023

When I first read this question from Sahil Bloom, it made its way into my content idea note in seconds.

And I’ve broken it down a bit further to “If I repeated this action for 100 days, would my life be better or worse?”

It’s another way of considering if the daily actions you are taking are leading you to your highest life.

And, as Sahil pointed out in his original email, it’s a way of helping us focus on the daily.

We don’t tend to think about the daily level. We think in terms of months and years.

And while that’s helpful in planning out our goals, it is not helpful in addressing our actions to get to those goals.

I know that I often say “Well, next month I’ll…”

Why?

It’s simple. I’m thinking on a monthly/yearly scale. I’m zoomed out rather than in.

If I zoom in, I should be able to more effectively meet my goals because I’ll be considering my daily actions in terms of my goals.

And that allows me to build habits more effectively.

Daily habits aren’t easy, but they are the foundation of our highest selves.

I’ve been really digging into my physical routine recently.

I row 5,000 meters every day and generally walk at least 1 mile a day.

But I want to do more. My body deserves it.

That led me to focus on adding just a few minutes of additional exercise in the evenings.

I’m doing okay, but not great with it. It’s tough balancing it with all of the other competing interests I have in the evenings (both good and bad and unnecessary).

Where this mentality of “If I did this for 100 days” has really hit me hard though, is with regard to my diet.

Some days I do great and I’m steadily moving toward my plant-based lifestyle.

On other days, it’s an absolute disaster.

Recently, my struggle has been eating after the part time. I’m always a bit hungry after work, but my habit with the part time has been to grab some Taco Bell after I finish.

Not a healthy habit at all, for my diet or my wallet.

Last night was when it really hit me though. I really forced myself to consider: If I continued to get Taco Bell for 100 days, what is happening? Would my life be better or worse?

I settled on it would be worse.

And I made a commitment: no going out to eat unless it’s with someone else.

It’s going to force me to save money by eating at home and it’s going to help me be healthier overall.

Life is a long marathon lived in daily sprints, and each of those daily sprints matters.

📚 Inspiration and Resources
Every week we all consume content and I share my favorites here.

Learn.
Recently, I’ve picked up Duolingo again (I’ve had a very long on-again-off-again relationship for no real reason). This time, the habit is sticking! I’m learning Spanish and what’s super helpful is being able to see my streak on my iPhone’s home screen thanks to widgets. I’m not super far into learning yet, but it’s been nice to really start stretching my mind again in the language world. Give it a try here.

📓 Journaling Prompt
Journaling is one of the most important things to do when exploring our own lives. A new prompt for you to use this week is below.

Thinking of something you’ve been doing recently, if you continue to do it for 100 days, will it make your life better or worse?

Until next time, I wish you enough and send you off with love and a sense of urgency in your life.
