⏳ Erebus Growing | 0036 - Lessons turned to life tenets
What are the guide posts in your life?
Welcome to Erebus Growing, a weekly email where I share little snippets of life to help you change and grow into your highest life.
It’s been an emotional week. On Tuesday, I received information that clarified my next steps in terms of life.
In short, I’ll be leaving this little town I’ve called home for almost seven years.
And when I say emotional, it’s not exactly sadness and tears—no, that time will come—but more so conviction and excitement.
It was unexpected.
But I’m genuinely excited for the next chapter.
I’ve got some new items that I’ve purchased because I need them, and I’m starting to hunker down.
My life is changing and I’m honestly ecstatic about it.
I’m off for frisbee in a few minutes, but I hope you have an amazing week!
👨🏻💻 Meditation
Last week, I was thinking a lot about how you know when it’s time to leave someplace.
This past week, I came to the firm conclusion that it is time for me to leave.
All of the growing up is what has led me to this revelation.
When I came here, I was still a relatively young professional. I still had multiple marathon nights of video games and movies and such.
This is where I was when my grandmother, my second mother, died.
And this is where I was when I started my personal development journey.
This little mid-state town is where I have been when my life changed for the better.
I fell in love with my body again.
I fell out of love with this life of work-frenzy.
I fell in love with rowing and moving and stretching my body.
I mourned the loss of old life in my family.
And in all of this, and so much more, I fell in love with life and living.
I fell in love with the idea of building life with intention.
Plants, overnight oats, bagels, my cats, walking, podcasts, a sense of urgency, compliance work, the garden center, personal development, a second brain, stoicism, my limited time, designing life and intentional living, beautiful possessions, painting, my fish, yoga, and so many more things came into my life here.
I still have some time, but the most exciting part to me is that when I leave this place, I get to bring all of this history and knowledge and experience with me.
I get to let it help define the next stage of my life.
What are these things that are helping to define my life now?
I’ve been considering them for a long time and I want to share them with you this week but will dive into them in coming weeks.
They are my current life tenets.
Life will out.
You’re going to die, live accordingly.
A sense of urgency.
No one is coming to rescue you.
Practice progress, not perfection.
Honor your body.
You deserve the best this world has to offer.
You only need enough.
Easy now, hard later or hard now, easy later.
Every person lives their life guided by principals, whether chosen by them or for them.
A few years ago, I wouldn’t have even considered these tenets as guideposts in my life.
But they’ve quickly become core components of how I operate.
This week, I want to finish up with the journaling prompt.
I want to challenge you to consider what your life tenets are.
📚 Inspiration and Resources
Every week we all consume content and I share my favorites here.
Read.
Okay, so I’m bringing this around again because it’s been on my mind a lot lately, but I’ve shared about it before. Tiago Forte’s Building a Second Brain is the king of managing information, in my humble opinion. I’m still working on getting the process down in Obsidian given that I don’t have much free time between my 9-5 and my part time (and I like to spend some of that time not using my mind 😅). But, in short, what I’ve started working on has been wonderful just getting information and thoughts out of my head. Give it a read here.
Use.
A tool I’ve been exploring more in-depth again is Obsidian. As I started to build my strength in knowledge management, I needed that system to build my second brain. I have dabbled in a few different systems (Notion, Evernote, Apple Notes, Obsidian, etc.). And I’m landing on simple is better. So I’m working on building a process between Apple Notes and Obsidian—short-term and long-term. Give it a try here.
📓 Journaling Prompt
Journaling is one of the most important things to do when exploring our own lives. A new prompt for you to use this week is below.
