⏳ Erebus Growing | 0064 - First/second responses
The relationship between first and second responses can be interesting
Welcome to Erebus Growing, a weekly email where I share little snippets of life to help you change and grow into your highest life.
It’s been a long week of difficult moments and conversations.
I received an offer last week for a new position at a different 9-5. This past week, I received a contract to look over and decide if I wanted to accept or not.
I’ve still got some things to take care of before I make any major announcements on my decisions.
I’m also having to manage some things with my childhood home that I didn’t want to have to deal with, but we’re working on it.
And I’m moving out of my apartment in two months, so I’m getting ready to downsize and pack things.
It’s about to become a very busy and packed two months.
This week, I spent some time thinking about responding to things.
👨🏻💻 Meditation
You cannot control your first thought about something, but you can control your second.
You cannot control your first reaction to something, but you can control your second.
The reality is your first response is likely not going to be ideal.
But your second response is absolutely within your control meaning you get to choose how you respond to things.
It can be difficult in a world where you believe you can’t control your responses to stimuli.
So, understand that you can’t control your initial response. Free yourself of that burden and learn to focus on controlling the next response.
You change your life by living as though your life has changed, you do the same with your responses.
As you focus on addressing your next response, you make the changes in the foundation that allow you to change your first response.
And those foundational changes, those are the ones we’re trying to get at. Those are the pieces that change who we are.
📓 Journaling Prompt
Journaling is one of the most important things to do when exploring our own lives. A new prompt for you to use this week is below.
Do you do more of what makes you happy?
